Wild Makeup: Wild Fire Summer Fairy

20 January, 2015

It's been a while since I did a wild look..  The Midsummer Fairy Rede, Melbourne's biggest Fairy Parade was an excellent opportunity to go all out..
Our household decided on a seasonal theme - I was a Summer themed Fire Fairy..
For this I wanted to be really bright, so I went straight for the professional pigments. I used Concrete Minerals in (L to R): Vegas, Risqué, Ember and Fame
I also used Medusa Makeup Gel Eyeliner in Redy or Not for extra oomph and saving power on the red.
I needed my lip colour to last all day, so I used the super long lasting liquid lipstick from Menow - this one is No 33 Currant Red.  - I added a touch of Fame for an ombre look.

We also made headdresses and wings, which was a lot of fun, and a great way to prototype up some more stuff for Adored Adornments

My daughter was a Winter Ice Fairy, and her makeup required a more subtle palate..

From left to right:

Farore's Wind - Shiro Cosmetics
Quantum - AFK Cosmetics
Diamond Dust & Element Zero - Geek Chic Cosmetics
Lexington - Glamour Doll Eyes

For the snowflakes and white detailing, I turned again to the Medusa Makeup Gel Eyeliners - this time in "White Noise".

The wings and headdresses will be up for sale in Adored Adornments in the next few days. We had such a lot of fun at the parade, and ended up walking just under 7km, quite the workout!

Swatched: Portland Black Lipstick Company

06 January, 2015

People love PBLC - their lipsticks have amazing, hard-to-find colours, and the formulation is that wonderful combination of great opaque colour that lasts really well, and a lovely moisturising effect for the lips.

I have real trouble keeping them in stock at Beauty Bohemia which is exactly the kind of problem you want to have, really.

Here's a roundup of their colours. These were all taken in natural light, with a "regular" application of lipstick (not one sweep, not packing it on):

Artificial Amethyst

Bad Penny

Black Lagoon

Bugs Blood

Coffee, Black

The Coral is Coming From Inside the House

Difficult Island

Gilded Lily

Imitation Cherry

Indigo Bridge

The Secret of Invisibility

lux et voluptas

Perfect Foil

Pewter Cauldron

Purple Cloud

Snow Queen

This Corrosion

Undead Red

Goodbye, Little Yellow Bird

Which is your favourite?

iFOTD - Shiro Cosmetics Red in my Ledger, Remake and Attercorp, Attercorp

03 January, 2015

Finally got to see The Hobbit - The Battle of Five Armies tonight - it was just about as awesome as I was expecting..

In honour of the occasion I had to bust out some dwarven gold, so I grabbed one of the brightest golds in my collection - Remake, from Shiro Cosmetics. It's part of the Hunger Games collection, being the Cinna colour.. I'm sure I'm not the only makeup lover who totally wanted Cinna's gold eyes... this is a gorgeous bright gold with a lot of impact.

Then of course I had to pair it with something from Shiro's  Hobbit collection - This amazing blue black is  Attercop, Attercop - it shimmers and sparkles a lot.

Going with the shimmery shiny theme, for my lips I chose "Red in My Ledger" - the Black Widow inspired lipgloss from Shiro's Avengers themed collection.

Top to bottom - Attacop, Attacop; Remake; Red in my Ledger, all from Shiro Cosmetics.

Both of these colours have a lot of amazing duochrome stuff going on, and they play together very nicely. Plus Juicy Mango and Calypso totally sound like the sort of cocktail you'd have on holiday.

Indie Makeup.. What it is, and why you'll love it!

08 July, 2014

As regular readers know, I've been devoting a lot of time and energy to my online indie makeup store, Beauty Bohemia. If you already know all about indie makeup and why it's awesome, then you might be surprised to learn that there are plenty of people, I'm learning, who don't really know what indie makeup is, much less why they'd be interested in it. So - here I go, attempting a bit of an explanation. You can consider this an Indie Makeup 101!

Indie Makeup is makeup that's handmade by small businesses. Most of the cosmetics in the stores are made in big factories by huge companies. Indie Makeup is made in small sterile workshops, and the operations are usually run by young women.

So why would you buy Indie Makeup instead of heading to your local department store makeup counter? Here's some of the reasons I love indie makeup:

1. It's Handmade.
The "handmade revolution" has gained huge popularity amongst people who are seeking to be a bit more mindful and ethical in their consumption - by supporting artisans and buying handmade, you get goods of better quality, that have been ethically produced, rather than increasing the profits of a big company who might be employing sweatshop labour, you're instead putting your money right into the hands of the person who made the item from scratch. A lot of people though, who support handmade with their fashion and homewear purchases haven't yet fully embraced the idea that you can do this with makeup, too!

2. The Quality is Amazing
In the highly competitive world of indie makeup, only the best survive - the colours are are meticulously blended, and because they are made in small batches, the makers can create all sorts of amazing colour blends. From subtle mattes and neutrals to the most sparkly iridescent duochrome pigments you've ever seen, you can expect high pigmentation, long lasting formulations and a dazzling variety of shades to choose from. Because the makers are in direct contact with their customers, they are constantly monitoring feedback from their customer group, so the quality stays really high. The packaging is handmade and might not be as glossy as a high-end product, but what really counts is what's inside - people that get accustomed to indie pigments often find it really hard to go back to other mass manufactured brands.

2. It's Individual and Fun
A lot of indie makeup makers create collections in various themes. Whether it's your favourite TV show or movie fandom (be it Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games, Harry Potter) or even themes from a certain era of history, Internet memes or computer games. Indie Makeup is full of quirky, fun names and themes that let you celebrate your personality and what you love in a way that can be as subtle or bold as you like. You'd probably raise a few eyebrows if you showed up to work in cosplay, but with indie makeup, you can participate in your fandom in a fun way, and no one else need know, unless you tell them.

4. It's much cheaper than you'd believe.
Unlike other "handmade pledges" you might make, this one could really save you money. With eyeshadows, lipsticks and blushes all clocking in at under $10 a pop, you can save a lot of money. Many people are very pleasantly surprised by how reasonable the prices are.

While there are some Aussie indie makeup makers, the majority of the most popular brands are in the US or UK - when they do ship to Australia, the shipping costs can be dire, erasing the savings made in the makeup. Organising a group order or freight forwarding can be a real pain. That's the main reason I decided to take the plunge to bring in the best indie makeup brands into Australia in bulk - and I also decided to match the price of the makers on Beauty Bohemia as well. I'm hoping a lot more people get into the indie makeup!

Fire Demon Costume Fantasy Makeup

24 June, 2014

Recently I did a DJ gig at a fantasy costume event called "The Goblin Ball" - each year a different theme is set and people really go all out with their outfits - last year was an ice theme, this year it had a Fire theme called Ember Rule.

Of course I need very few excuses to go all-out with the red so this was an easy theme for me. I was going for a dark fae/demon kind of look, and based my look around my awesome horns from The Fable Workshop.

As you can see I dove deep into my red eyeshadow collection, and was also very liberal with the glitter - here's what I wound up with!

If you fancy trying this look yourself, or perhaps a more toned down version, you can see all the amazing red toned things I have in the store here:

MeNow Velvet Finish Liquid Lipstick Swatches

These are seriously long lasting - really seriously long lasting. Once they dry, they are there to stay. You can scrub at them even and they won't budge.. check out this quick video I made and you'll see what I mean:

Introducing Beauty Bohemia

28 March, 2014

Well, as (I hope) you may have noticed, it's been a bit quiet around here... there haven't been any new blog posts for a while. I can now reveal that there's been a pretty good reason for that.

You see,  I have been putting every waking moment into launching a new venture, one I am pretty excited to tell you about.

My love for makeup is no secret, and there is a special place in my heart for cool and awesome indie makeup brands - I love the geeky collections, the unique colours, the attention to detail, the great prices - they're my favourite kind of makeup.

Being in Australia, though, they're not always easy to get - when you can find them, the shipping charges can be nasty - you either pay up, or organise a group order, or use a freight forwarder.. it's all a bit of a hassle, really.

Wouldn't it be awesome if someone was just shipping all the cool stuff here so you could buy it locally??

Well.. that's exactly what I am going to do. What I have already done, actually, as you'll see when you have a look at my shiny new makeup store - Beauty Bohemia.

I have, to my great delight, gotten some fantastic brands on board for my launch - Concrete Minerals, Glamour Doll Eyes, Shiro Cosmetics, Medusa's Makeup, Masquerade Cosmetics - and that's just the beginning, there are many more coming. I'm adding stock just as fast as my fingers can create the listings!

Please have a look and tell me what you think, your comments and feedback are very much appreciated.
